I went to the grocery store and found some steak for 50% off since its best before date was today. It’s also wrapped in bacon, so as a student, I came out pretty well.

Peppered and salted fried steak, steamed new potatoes in herb butter (then lightly tossed in the frying pan with the steak juices) and carrot and swede mash with a knob of salted butter.

Result, meal full of taste and flavour.

Tech week is over!!!! Holy fuck we open on Saturday. I’ve been teaching all day, then riding a bus straight to rehearsal where I’m stage managing a children’s production. Tonight was our final dress. I get my weekday evenings back, but lose my weekends for the rest of the month. I’m okay with this trade-off.

My husband is also in tech week and tonight is his final dress. He opens tomorrow night. I look forward to seeing my husband during the week again. I miss him.

I went to see Star Wars today.

Tomorrow is my first day back to work after a week and a half off. Holiday temp work ended but they picked me up for permanent staff so nice, starting off 2016 having a job is nice. At LUSH Cosmetics . So I am doing a catalog studying this evening to be on point tomorrow morning.

I threw together a brief little thing about the forthcoming Gardener album over on Mezzotempo . I have actually been having some pretty bad anxiety issues lately and am taking a little hiatus from writing, at least the serious stuff for Doom Rocket. Side shit endless always.

Leftover sweet potato, carrot, and parsnip mash. With a second course of cheese because reasons.

I learned today that Gates McFadden from Star Trek Next Gen regularly worked for Jim Henson pre-ST:TNG days, doing choreography on Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal.

Soup and a turkey & cheese pressed sandwich.

I’ve been looking for work the past month since consulting gigs have been sparse and I only have two classes to take to finish my graduate school work. Unfortunately I couldn’t take them both this semester since they’re offered on the same night. C’est la vie.

Anyway, I had two interviews (initial and final round) a few weeks ago and didn’t end up getting that position. Which is fine, I wasn’t a perfect match (probably a 75% match) but the work was something I’m interested in. But another position opened up today in that same department that I am %110 match for and, while different from the first position I interviewed for, is another area I’m very interested in.

So I’m going to apply for the new position and I want to do a good cover letter to include in the materials. My past cover letters have been more about connecting my skills to the job which according to Lifehacker is the opposite of what I should do. Which means I’m going to attempt to craft a cover letter that demonstrates my personality and what I can bring to the organization that can’t be easily quantified on my resume.

Anyone else have any successful stories about using a cover letter like this? Any pointers? The examples they gave on The Muse all came across as very corny.

Maybe a tamale. Maybe leftovers from last night. Also I’m grouchy because my running partner is flaking on me for the third time this week so he can go to crossfit, and I am feeling salty and selfish about it. I realize it’s not really reasonable or fair for me to throw it at him that he isn’t working fulltime (or really at all), and he could easily go to a different crossfit class tomorrow and we could still run together (he does double-days pretty regularly), but I kind of want to.

Anyway, wine first. I’ll feel better in 5, 4, 3 ....

I went to a visitation for someone I knew who just died very unexpectedly. She was an animator, and there was some talk that she had done some work on SWTFA. I am seeing it next weekend and had already counted on crying through the film from sheer nostalgia (I have waited 40 years for this) and emotion, and now, when watching the credits as is my habit, if I see her name, the waterworks will begin all over again.

Came home emotionally wrecked but a kind neighbour came upstairs with some beer, so I’m trying to talk myself down.

Any info on what the hell’s going on at LUSH? Things are disappearing from the website at an unprecedented rate...are they doing all new lines of stuff or something? Between Christmas and now (when I’m planning what to do with my birthday money) like 50% of the damned soaps disappeared. And I need to plan ahead for a company like LUSH, I’m allergic to bananas, plantains and avocados and *shrug* so much of their stuff contains one or more of those things. Also, wtf is up with the perfumes? It's been almost a full year now that they've been promising new perfumes and a perfume version of Veerappan, and I've seen nothing.

URGH. FaceOff in it's first week is already going better than Top Chef in it's what...sixth? I don't get this season of TC, half the people on it I keep wanting Tom and Emeril to sit down individually and just grill them on "do you want to fucking be here or not" because it feels like (yes, still, even though we've had weeks of competition and sudden death/elimination quickfires) like about a third of them still just can't even be bothered to TRY.

I usually hide in the safe area of OPPO, occasionally pop over to Jalopnik then Jezebel, Gawker and filter through other sites but I post on them with caution as there are a lot of strange people out there who will argue black is white for the sake of it before sending everything out on a tangent.

I like food but don’t always get time or have the energy to really appreciate it how it should be.

I love food, and cooking is one of my hobbies. With the loss of kitchenette, it was nice to have the continuing food-related thread, but I haven’t seen one all month. It’s disappointing, because it was one of the few threads that did get almost as big as the kitchenette comments, and it stayed really very civil.

Well, as I am a sales associate, I’m not sure how qualified I am to speak on all this stuff. In my experience, Christmas is huge for Lush so after Christmas a lot of stuff is gone. Also after Christmas is the Buy One Get One sale so a lot of what was left is also gone too. On the other hand, they just released half a dozen new and returning items for Valentine’s Day, so, like always, stuff cycles in and stuff cycles out.

They are reformulating two or three kinds of perennial soap and put the old recipes on BOGO sale so that is probably a large contributing factor to the state of soaps.

Banana is only in a couple of things but avocado is in tons and tons of stuff, you definitely need to be careful. Complete ingredient lists for each product on the website.

They just did a bunch of perfumes that are exclusive to the kitchen? I don’t know what their plans are moving forward with general release.

Kinja'd!!! KateFromIowa > Arpad Okay
01/15/2016 at 17:49

Ah, if they're reformulating a lot of the base items I suppose that would make sense. The website just looked so depressingly bare when I went through it the other day, it really threw me. And given that I've shopped LUSH since before it was stateside (it was perfect for gifts for a couple of friends I have in England and Ireland,) it was really disappointing to see.
